With Christmas as we know it being largely a Victorian invention, the Victorian home—and even more so, the Victorian rectory—seems uniquely suited to this time of year.
Our charming collection of watercolours by Victoria Susan Satterthwaite (1837–1906) evoke the dedicated life of a Victorian village curate and his wife. Rev Charles James Satterthwaite served as curate at Disley in Cheshire for fifty-one years and was determined in his fundraising for the growing local mining community. Victoria tenderly depicts her children, Ghita, Eddie and Geoffie, at Disley parsonage.
