The sublime 'Alpine' slopes pictured here are not European but rather in the Chamba district in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, named 'Alpine Beauty' by British officers. Lohally Gully and Dain Khound are painted from Dalhousie, in 1861, attributed to Henry Brabazon Urmston, who served in the Bengal Army 1847–74. Urmston held various positions, including Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab with special duty in Kashmir during 1857, and Deputy Commissioner in Peshawar, Bannu, Sialkot, Amritsar and Rawalpindi.
