Leading Artist of the Newlyn School

Leading Artist of the Newlyn School

The technique in watercolour and pencil of Eleanor Hughes RI (1882–1959) has been compared to that of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. A leading member of the Larmorna colony of artists (having studied under Stanhope Forbes at Newlyn), Hughes was a close friend of Dame Laura and Harold Knight, and Larmorna Birch. She was married to the artist Robert Morson Hughes, and the couple built their house, 'Chyangweal', near St Buryan. Eleanor Hughes had a particular interest in trees, using their linear shape as inspiration for the study of pattern and form.
