Keeping to a Grand Tour theme, newly listed this week is this sumptuous veduta oil showing an iconic view on the Grand Canal in Venice. The painting is curiously inscribed 'Edith Lydia Proctor 1900' on the reverse—it's unclear whether this is the artist and date of execution as the canvas itself (Kemp & Co, Holden Terrace, Pimlico) dates from somewhat earlier, 1877–89, and we have been unable to find any substantive information about her. In any case, detail is a feast for the eyes—and evidence of the enduring popularity of the Canaletto's Venice in Britain.
