On the Hooghly

Life on the Hooghly river in Bengal, through the eyes—and pen—of Malcolm Hamilton Beattie (1862–1941).

Beattie served with the Hooghly Pilot Service from 1878 to 1913, and on his return to England, wrote an illustrated book of his time in India, 'On the Hooghly', 1935. Many of the drawings in our new collection were reproduced in his book.
