Southsea Terrace, Portsmouth

It's always interesting to see a really different view of a place—here looking towards the Isle of Wight from Southsea, Portsmouth, c.1810. Drawn by Juliana Glegg, 'from our lodgings on the Southsea Terrace', it provides a fascinating record of the coastal marshland at Southsea at the beginning of the 19th century. Known as the Great Morass and the Little Morass, the area was drained in the 1830s and flattened by parties of convicts employed to level the area, forming what is now Southsea Common.
