Charles Louis Guigon Swiss Barque Sailing Off Shore
An original mid-19th-century watercolour painting, Charles Louis Guigon, Swiss Barque Sailing Off Shore.
A finely painted, elegant composition by Swiss landscape painter Charles-Louis Guigon (1807–1882). The location of the view is unspecified; rather, the artist brings together an attractive set of motifs and techniques. The view balances the background hills and sky, rendered in loose watercolour, with the foreground waves and rocks, where the addition of gum arabic and scratching out brings intensity and definition. A traditional Swiss sailing barque, common to Lake Geneva, and tiny figures walking at the right enliven the scene.
With scratching out to the water and gum arabic to intensify the colour. One of a pair by the artist that we have for sale (see KB-445. Please note that the width of the two paintings are different).
