Richard Dighton Gentleman Holding an Umbrella & Note
An original early 19th-century watercolour painting, Richard Dighton, Gentleman Holding an Umbrella & Note.
A wonderful full-length profile portrait of a society gentleman by Richard Dighton (1795–1880). Finely painted in watercolour with graphite and gum arabic to intensify the black.
The inimitable profile portraits for which Richard Dighton became famous are considered predecessors of the Vanity Fair style of the late 19th century. His work played an important role in the transition between painted portraiture and photography.
