Early 20th-century Norfolk: Robert J. Gedge

The artist, Robert J. Gedge, is believed to be Robert John Gedge, born 1872 in Coltishall on the Norfolk Broads. This watercolour is one of a collection of paintings by Gedge that we have for sale, depicting views around the Coltishall area, at Horstead, on the Bure, and further afield to Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. Scenes feature local red brick architecture, Broads boats, figures and animals, giving a real sense of time and place. The paintings are executed in an impressionistic style and distinctive palette—of terracottas, salmon pinks and yellow-greens—which imbues their subjects with the soft warmth of an East Anglian summer.
