An original 1830 watercolour painting – W.F.S., Byron's 'Mazeppa' Tied to a Wild Horse.
A spirited illustration to Lord Byron's poem 'Mazeppa' with verses below. Mazeppa is based on a popular legend about the early life of Ivan Mazepa (1639–1709), who later became Hetman (military leader) of Ukraine. When young Mazeppa has a love affair with a Polish Countess, Theresa, he is punished by being tied naked to a wild horse.
In pen and ink with watercolour wash. On pale yellow paper.
