Jules Montigny (1847–1899) was a member of the Tervuren School—Belgium's equivalent to France's Barbizon School of landscape painting. Belgian painters Camille Van Camp and Hippolyte Boulenger came together at Tervuren in 1864 and formed an artists' colony, where they were joined by other prominent painters, including Jules Montigny, Lucien Frank, Joseph Coosemans, Isidore Verheyden and Guillaume Vogels. Breaking with tradition, they rejected the formality of academic painting and were inspired by the surrounding nature—working en plein air and developing in the direction of Impressionism.
