An original c.1832 watercolour painting Waterfall at Trefriw, Caernarfonshire, Wales.
A fine and impressive large vignette watercolour in blue-grey and brown wash. The Romantic landscape subject, featuring rocky crags and rushing water, draws on Rev William Gilpin's aesthetic principles of the picturesque, exquisitely placed between the 'sublime' and the 'beautiful'.
The painting formed part of a series commissioned in 1832 by Catherine Johnstone née Brome (1775–1833), who was married to William Johnstone, Vicar of Culmington, Ludlow.
On buff-coloured paper laid down on backing paper.
