This drawing forms part of a collection of works by J.K. Gibson, dating from 1918-19. The drawings are a mixture of World War One and early Art Deco themed subjects, mainly drawn in caricature or cartoon style. The military subjects, both British and German, are lightly satirical, whilst the Art Deco illustrations are highly stylised in black and white and silhouette. The drawings are very much of their time, and are a reflection of popular preoccupations towards the close of the First World War. Little is known of the illustrator; some of the paper is headed verso “R. Singlehurst & Co Ltd, Liverpool”, who operated steamships of the Red Cross Line from Liverpool to Northern Brazil, suggesting that the artist was possibly involved with the navy and that, given their subjects, the drawings were produced during active service.
