Church Tomb Paintings: 1870s
This small collection of works feature church tombs around Derbyshire and Staffordshire, including the Beresford Tomb at Fenny Bentley church, the tombs of Cockayne and Bradbourne at Ashbourne church, and the tomb of William Bassett of Blore. The paintings have a wonderful painterly quality, breathing a sense of life into their monumental subjects. They represent the great interest in churches in the 19th century - a new interest in the architecture of the past, and in particular Gothic architecture. Church-furnishing was a new highly influential industry, accompanying a spirit of revivalism within the Church of England and return to ancient forms of worship and a focus on Holy Communion. The collection also includes some interesting Spanish architectural subjects at Toledo.
