A scenic view across the canal in Amsterdam. On J. Whatman watermarked wove paper.

This painting is one of a collection we have by artist H.M.W. (also signed “Mayhew”), which includes African landscapes in Tanzania and Rhodesia/Zimbabwe as well as English views. Some of the paintings are technical studies inscribed with “Copy of criticism” verso, recording feedback given by the artist John Carlisle.

John Carlisle (fl.1866-1916) was a British landscape painter. He lived in London and Dorking, and later at Keats Cottage in Hampstead. He painted in Devon, Wales, Scotland and Guernsey, and in Italy. He exhibited widely including sixty-two paintings at the Walker Gallery in London.
