An original 1910 watercolour painting, Joseph Clayton Clarke, Illustration for Cigarette Card, Sergeant Buzfuz, Pickwick Papers.

The fantastic original artwork for one of a series of 50 cigarette card designs produced by Joseph Clayton Clarke, known as Kyd, for John Player & Sons in 1910.Here Sergeant Buzfuz from The Pickwick Papers is rendered in ink and wash. The book, published in 1837, remains exceptionally popular, especially in its merciless mockery of the law and lawyers. Sergeant Buzfuz ('Sergeant' is equivalent to the modern QC) is no match for Pickwick's manservant, Sam Weller.

On laid paper laid down on thin drawing board.

This drawing comes with the corresponding printed cigarette card, on which the figure's pose is slightly different.

Joseph Clayton Clarke 'Kyd' 1857–1937

Joseph Clayton Clarke (1857–1937) worked under the pseudonym ‘Kyd’. Born on the Isle of Man, Clarke had many occupations during his lifetime, including designer of cigarette cards and postcards, and as a fore-edge painter principally specializing in characters from the works of Charles Dickens. 'Kyd' emulated the the larger-than-life characters that he portrayed, dressing in a flamboyant style for the period.

Clarke’s illustrations can be found in the collections of the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Charles Dickens Museum and the University of Texas at Austin.
