Early 19th-Century Whig & Tory Politician Cartoons
This collection of works by a single hand depicts renowned Whig and Tory politicians of the late 18th century/beginning of the 19th century – including William Pitt the Younger, Edmund Burke, George Canning, Charles James Fox and Francis Burdett. The figures are shown dressed in wonderful 18th-century dress of wigs, breeches, knee-length coats and buckled shoes. The cartoons satirise the politicians’ opposing political and oratorical styles, and are an example of 18th-century exultation of wit and reason. The collection likely dates from the beginning of the 19th century.
