An original c.1930s watercolour painting, James Walker Tucker, A Summer Breeze in the Cotswolds (from Horsepools, Gloucestershire).
This handsome watercolour is one of a pair that we have for sale by James Walker Tucker (1898–1972). Here he paints the Cotswold landscape in Gloucestershire: a chequered valley view at Horsepools, near Painswick north of Stroud. Animals are glimpsed grazing in the 'summer breeze' through jostling tree foliage. Tucker represents the landscape with a consciousness of form and sense of pattern—modern, geometric and graphic. Reminiscent of the work of Eric Ravilious (1903–1942), he approaches his pastoral subjects with a preference for flat planes and hard lines.
In watercolour with blue bodycolour highlights to the trees. On watercolour paper.
Presented in a smart oak frame with Christie's label (85 Old Brompton Road) on the back. Frame size: 55 x 69cm. Image size: 34.6 x 49.8cm.
