Figure & Landscape Studies in Ink & Graphite
This is an interesting collection of works, in pen and ink and graphite, of varied landscape and figure subjects. Most appear to date from the late 19th century; one drawing is signed J.E. Compton 1879. A number, on watermarked laid paper, are earlier. Some drawings have additions of graphite and wash. Many are studies, examining a variety of landscape compositions and the human form in different poses. The collection includes a number of sensitively drawn portrait sketches of men, women and children, as well as rural landscapes with trees, churches, bridges and small figures.
