An original 1874 graphite drawing, Jules Montigny Horses & Cart on Rural Road.
This signed graphite sketch by Belgian artist Jules Leon Montigny (1847-1899) depicts working horses pulling a cart on a rural road, likely in Tervuren. School van Tervuren painter Jules Montigny is known for his pastoral subjects, and farm horses in particular.
On blue-grey laid paper. This is one of a pair of graphite drawings by Montigny that we have for sale.
Signed lower right.
In good condition for its age overall, there is a light crease running obliquely down the paper near the centre, as shown. The paper has deckle edges as shown. There is a small patch of thinning to the paper at the lower left, which appears to be an irregularity in the paper production and is only visible when backlit.
10.1cm x 15.5cm.
Jules Montigny (1847-1899) was a member of the Tervuren School - Belgium’s equivalent to France’s Barbizon School of landscape painting. Belgian painters Camille Van Camp and Hippolyte Boulenger came together at Tervuren in 1864 and formed an artists’ colony, where they were joined by other prominent painters, including Jules Montigny, Lucien Frank, Joseph Coosemans, Isidore Verheyden and Guillaume Vogels. Breaking with tradition, they rejected the formality of academic painting and were inspired by the surrounding nature - working en plein air and developing in the direction of Impressionism.
This work forms part of a fascinating larger collection of mainly equestrian pictures which we have for sale, connected with two highly regarded horse painters: Charles Loraine-Smith (1751-1835), a keen horseman known for his early hunting and sporting scenes, and Charles Cooper Henderson (1803-1877), the pre-eminent painter of Victorian horses and coaches. At a time when animal painting was seen as a ‘lower’ form of art, these artists were pioneering in establishing the respectability and status of the genre. The story of why these pictures have come together is a mystery, but it is possible that the collection was at one time owned by Charles Cooper Henderson: our collection includes a watercolour by William James Müller – and, interestingly, Charles’s brother, the distinguished art collector John Henderson, was an avid collector of Müller’s works.
