There is a tiny loss at the upper right corner of the sheet, and on the verso at the corners are paper remnants from historic mounting.

This is one a spectacular set of original decorative designs we have for sale by a student of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, working in the period 1881-3. A label on the drawings' original folio indicates that these designs were exhibited at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Such international exhibitions and world fairs were opportunities for nations to demonstrate their technical and scientific ingenuity - and present cutting-edge fashions in the fields of fine and decorative arts. These designs, principally for ceramics, are very much of their time. A product of the classical training of a prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts, they incorporate elements of classical antiquity, but they also show elements of the new and avant-garde: the emerging Art Nouveau style which was to take centre stage at the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles, and flourish in Europe for the next decade.
The majority of these designs are signed and dated by the artist, L. Denizot, and some are inscribed ‘inv’ and ‘del’, indicating that the artist not only drew these designs but invented them.
