An original c.1830s watercolour painting, Attrib. Mary Heber, Newfoundland Dog Portrait.
A handsome canine subject attributed to Mary Heber (1787–1846) of Hodnet Hall in Shropshire, inspired no doubt by the popularity that Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802–1873) brought to the Newfoundland dog breed. Landseer's paintings celebrated Newfoundland dogs as water rescue dogs. 'Landseer' came to be the official name for the variety of Newfoundland dog that features a mix of both black and white.
