Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) was a famous children’s book illustrator. She began her career designing cards and calendars, with distinctive images of children and young people dressed in early-19th-century costume. Her designs were hugely popular and widely imitated. She published numerous story books and almanacs for children to great critical acclaim. In 1889 she became an elected member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. In 1955 the Kate Greenaway Medal was established, and exists annually to this day, awarded for outstanding children’s book illustration.

There are minor knocks to the corners and edges of the cards, and some foxing and discolouration as shown. One card has a short tear at the upper edge, a fold across the lower left corner and a vertical crease line right of centre. There are small losses and knocks to the leather on the boards.
Each card: 18.8cm x 24.1cm.
Boards: 19cm x 25.5cm.
