F. Matthews was a typical British traveller of the late-Victorian period, who visited the Italian Lakes, around Como and Maggiore, and in the Swiss canton of Valais, in the years 1895 to 1898. Matthews was clearly a person of significant means, who stayed at some of the great, grand hotels of Europe in the 19th century.
