Roadmender French Caricature - Original mid-19th-century graphite drawing

An original mid-19th-century graphite drawing, Roadmender French Caricature.

A comical graphite drawing, with pen and ink accents in the hair, of a figure standing by the side of a road as a tramcar goes by, and signalling with a flag. An inscription reads 'le jeune Abassot, ayant eu des malheurs a l'ecarte', obtient l grade de cantonnier a la Rive Gauche.' This translates as 'young Abassot, having had bad luck at cards, gains the rank of roadmender on the Left Bank.'

Minor foxing and light age toning overall. Peripheral mount burn. Light overall creasing, particularly in the corners, with a heavier area running vertically along the left edge. Left edge shows significant wear, with curled edges, paper loss to the corners, and three small tears. Small patches of dried glue also visible along this side, due to historical mounting.
18.8cm x 24cm.
