Sidney Horne Shepherd, Abstract Composition - Mid-20th-century mixed media

£74.00

An original mid-20th-century mixed media work, Sidney Horne Shepherd Abstract Composition.

A striking mixed media work by Sidney Horne Shepherd (1909-1993). The overall image is abstract, although the shapes are tantalisingly suggestive of figurative elements such as table, chair, stacked boxes, doorway and possible figure.

Mixed media including paint, chalk and scratching out. Use of a masking fluid or wax resist has given the work interesting textural depth.

Signed upper right.
Generally in fine condition. There are minor small creases across the far corners of the sheet.
37.8 cm x 27.8cm.
Unframed.

This work forms part of a collection we have for sale by Scottish artist Sidney Horne Shepherd (1909-1993). Shepherd was an exceptional draughtsman, a talent he used as a starting point for exploring a great range of media, including oil, watercolour, charcoal, linocut, monoprint and mixed media works. His style is enduringly modern, and his subjects often included visually arresting nudes.

Born in Dundee, Shepherd trained at Dundee School of Art (1924-6) and then Glasgow School of Art. Having won a number of prizes and scholarships, he became Assistant Art Teacher at Glasgow 1930-2, the first of many posts and the beginning of a successful career as a beloved and inspiring teacher.

After relocating to London to complete a series of portrait commissions, he became an art lecturer at Shoreditch Training Collage in 1937, becoming senior lecturer in 1947. He went on to work at Ealing School of Art, St Martin’s School of Art and Sir John Cass School of Art up until his retirement in 1974.

He exhibited at numerous galleries in Scotland and across the UK throughout his lifetime, including the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Institute of Fine Arts, Leicester Gallery, Redfern Gallery and Victoria and Albert Museum. His work is in many private and public collections both nationally and internationally, including the V&A London; McManus Galleries, Dundee; the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia; and Auckland Art Gallery, New Zealand.
