Henry Levasseur, French Alpine View with Meadow -Early 20th-century oil painting

An original early 20th-century oil painting, Henry Levasseur French Alpine View with Meadow.

This charming work on wooden panel is part of a set of four by the artist that we have for sale. The sumptuous palette of rich blue-greens and impasto application of paint combine to give a sensuous evocation of rural France. The composition and focus on the natural world owe much to the work of Impressionists such as Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley. Little is known about the artist, Henry Levasseur, other than his dates, 1883-1954, and his tendency to paint French subjects in an impressionist style. The work is executed directly onto a wooden panel which appears to be from a former cigar box, stamped 'Lo Mejor' on the back. This tactile, recycled quality adds to the painting’s rustic charm and authenticity.

Signed lower left.
Overall in good condition. There is a small hole in the panel upper-centre, left over from when the wood formed part of a cigar box and would have had a clasp or tie inserted here. There is slight wear to the paint in places at the far edges, which would be covered by a frame.
16.2cm x 23.4cm.
