Paul Sandby RA
Paul Sandby RA (1725-1809) was a landscape painter who specialised in watercolours, having begun his career as a map-maker. Together with his elder brother Thomas, he became one of the 28 founder members of the Royal Academy. Sandby made extensive tours of Britain and Ireland, sketching what he saw. He also etched a large number of plates after his own drawings. He was described in his obituary as 'the father of modern landscape painting in watercolours.'
