Sir Thomas Alfred Jones PRHA, Portrait of Young Girl - 1882 watercolour painting

An original 1882 watercolour painting, Sir Thomas Alfred Jones, Portrait of Young Girl.

This is a captivating portrait in watercolour of a young blue-eyed girl by Irish portrait artist Sir Thomas Alfred Jones PRHA. The detail in the face is exquisitely delicate and life-like.

The paper is inscribed on the verso as shown: "[Ca?]thleen G. Jones / aged 15 months / Her father's darling / B[?]ton / 1882". The inscription has been partially cropped at the left edge as shown.

It is unclear whether the sitter is a relation of the artist - perhaps a grandchild. The touching sentiment "Her father's darling" further brings the portrait to life.

Signed lower right: "T.A. Jones P.R.H.A."
Foxing and age toning as shown. Although distinct, this does not significantly detract from the charm of the image as mottling tones with the overall colouring of the painting. There is also a very small repaired tear in the paper at the lower right corner between the letters "R" and "N".

19.2cm x 13.2cm.

Sir Thomas Alfred Jones P.R.H.A. (c.1823-1893) was an Irish portrait painter who became President of the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin.

Thomas Jones is thought to have been an orphaned child, brought up by well-known philanthropist Mr Archdale and his sisters. He attended the Royal Dublin Society's School in 1833 and entered Trinity College in 1842. He exhibited his first picture at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1841. He left Trinity College in 1846 without taking his degree and spent three years travelling on the Continent. On returning to Ireland he settled down as a portrait painter, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1849 onwards.

After the death of Stephen Catterson Smith, Jones had almost a monopoly on portrait painting in Ireland, painting numerous portraits of notable figures. He was elected Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1860, and, on Catterson Smith’s retirement in 1869, succeeded to President. He was knighted in 1880 by Lord Lieutenant, the Duke of Marlborough.
