An original 1832 watercolour painting Waterfall near Capel Curig, Caernarvonshire, Wales.
A fine and impressive large vignette watercolour in blue-grey and brown wash. The Romantic landscape subject, featuring the towering crags and rushing water of Snowdonia near Capel Curig, draws on Rev William Gilpin's aesthetic principles of the picturesque, exquisitely placed between the 'sublime' and the 'beautiful'.
The painting formed part of a series commissioned in 1832 by Catherine Johnstone née Brome (1775–1833), who was married to William Johnstone, Vicar of Culmington, Ludlow.
On pale green paper laid down on backing paper.
