Wiltshire Landscapes 1880s: E.G.H. Pen & Ink Drawings

This collection of delicate sketches are by a single hand with the initials E.G.H. The artist was possibly someone connected with Wiltshire; subjects in the collection include Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge and Old Sarum on the Wiltshire plains, the site of the earliest settlement of Salisbury. This late-Victorian documenter of Britain had an eye for picturesque compositions, including castle ruins and wooden windmill, with artfully placed small figures and animals. These are often dramatised by atmospheric cloud formations and beams of sunlight, all rendered in meticulous ink line and cross-hatch.
