Devon artist Victor Papworth embarked on numerous sketching tours of Britain in the 1960s and 1970s and produced a remarkable number of paintings and drawings documenting the British landscape. In a post-war era when the foreign travel industry was booming, Papworth finds delight in the picturesque mountains, lakes, fells, dales and vales of Yorkshire, Cumbria and Derbyshire, Scotland and Wales. He also explores Devon and Cornwall’s coastal views, villages and harbours, as well as rural churches and castles. Working in gouache and pastel, his works are vigorous, expressive and vibrant, charting the consistent beauty in the landscape throughout changing weather and seasons.
