An original early 19th-century watercolour painting – Attrib. William Page, Malmesbury Abbey Ruin.
A fine drawing in brown wash attributed to William Page (1794–1872).
Page drew British abbey ruins on a number of occasions, including known views at Dryburgh Abbey and Melrose Abbey in Scotland, St Mary's Abbey in York, and Malling Abbey in Kent. In the present drawing, the barn-like structure within the ruins resembles Malmesbury Abbey, in Wiltshire, where pigs were housed inside the west end of the Abbey.
This drawing appears to be a study in the picturesque, in both subject and composition.
This drawing is one of an interesting collection of works by / attributed to William Page that we have for sale.
In pen and brown ink with brown wash, over graphite, on rough paper.
