An original 1898 graphite drawing Fort at Belal, Possibly Sudan.

An interesting drawing. The location is possibly in Sudan, based on a hand-drawn military map that we acquired at the same time as this drawing (see JT-416). There is a village named Belal near Nyala in South Darfur in the south-west of Sudan. The date, March 1898, would tie in with the Anglo-Egyptian conquest of Sudan between 1896 and 1899. In January 1898 General Sir (later Lord) Horatio Herbert Kitchener brought up reinforcements from the British army, culminating in victory for the British at the Battle of Omdurman in September 1898.
