Anon. High Wycombe from Hughenden Manor
An original 19th-century watercolour painting High Wycombe from Hughenden Manor.
A particularly appealing 19th-century watercolour, with charming detail observed within the sweeping landscape view. Hughenden Manor was home to Queen Victoria's favourite Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli. The inscription states 'High Wycombe from Hughenden from a sketch taken on the morning J.W. Beaconsfield's funeral'.
This watercolour is one of a collection of works relating to the Dover area in Kent, apparently connected to the estate of Old Park at Whitfield, northeast of Dover. The artist had a preference for depicting senior statesmen, aristocracy, politicians and royalty, indicating that they were someone operating in these circles.
In watercolour with touches of white and red bodycolour highlights. The corners of the paper are clipped as shown.
