An original early 19th-century watercolour painting, Manner of Thomas Shotter Boys NWS, Female Figure by Rocky Outcrop.

An attractive watercolour in the manner of Thomas Shotter Boys NWS (1803–1874).

Boys is known for his French subjects—his most important work was a collection of lithographs of 'Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen' published in 1839. The placement of the lone figure is characteristic of Boys, as is the flair with which the grass detail is delineated.

Thomas Shotter Boys was a brilliant landscape watercolourist and also an innovative force in the history of lithography. In the 1830s he was the first artist to utilise registered stones for printing lithographs in complicated colour arrangements; nothing comparable was produced in colour printing until the revival of lithography in France at the end of the 19th century.

Provenance: The Collection of the etcher Percy James Westwood (1878-1958) and by descent.
