Lady Susan Harriet Holroyd Princess Royal and King Edward VII as Prince of Wales, and Princess Alice in 1843
An original c.1845 watercolour painting, Lady Susan Harriet Holroyd, Princess Royal and King Edward VII as Prince of Wales, and Princess Alice in 1843.
A charming watercolour painting by Lady Susan Harriet Holroyd (1829–1894) showing Queen Victoria's eldest three children in 1843: Victoria, Princess Royal (1840–1901); Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (1841–1910); and Princess Alice (1843–1878).
The painting is inscribed on the backing paper below: 'from a sketch by Ross[?] in the possession of the Duchess of Kent'. This is possibly the portraitist Sir William Ross (1794–1860). There is a photograph in the Royal Collection (RCIN 605989) of the original painting.
Lady Susan was daughter of George Holroyd, 2nd Earl of Sheffield, who went on to marry the English naturalist and Conservative politician, Edward Vernon Harcourt. A talented artist, she has a drawing in the Royal Collection, and is best known for her drawings of the island of Madeira that were published as a book of lithographs called 'Sketches of Madeira' in 1851.
