An original c.1845 watercolour painting Brownshill Court, Gloucestershire.
An attractive sweeping view across parkland to the Georgian manor of Brownshill Court near Painswick in Gloucestershire. The house was built in 1760 as a summer retreat for the Palling family, and was subsequently refined by the Cotswold architect Anthony Keck—a great admirer of Robert Adam, who also designed Highgrove in Tetbury.
This sketch is John Sell Cotman-esque in its contrasting blocks of light and dark and use of negative space to define forms. The architecture in the distance is delicately picked out in graphite.
In watercolour with graphite and touches of white bodycolour.
