The town of Königstein nestles below on the left bank of the River Elbe. The historic fortress, dating back to the 13th century, was, due to its strategic location, considered unconquerable and it most famously served as a prison, including in the 20th century as prisoner of war camp during the two world wars. Depicted from this low vantage point, however, the fortress is barely distinguishable from the rock plateau, and the scene is very much one of the power and majesty of the natural landscape as it is about human history.

John Dugmore of Swaffham (1793–1871) was born into Norfolk nobility in 1793. He benefited from a deep classical education and developed a sophisticated taste in the arts. On moving to London to seek his fame and fortune at the Royal Court, he met the man who was to become his patron, William Charles Keppel (1772–1849), 4th Earl of Albermarle. It is believed that Dugmore was responsible for Keppel children’s education, and he accompanied one of Keppel's son's on a Grand Tour in 1820. Over a period of twenty months, he passed from Scotland to Western Bohemia, France, Switzerland and Italy, recording the sights and views he encountered. This watercolour is very probably the product of that tour.

Dugmore's work has been praised for not only being visual witnesses of the shape of many main and minor European cities, but also for his ability in feeling and amplifying the esthetic news which he was meeting place by place. Dr Monro, physician to the King, would invite young artists to his home on winter Friday evenings, retaining their work and giving them three and sixpence and a supper of oysters. Most notable among the young artists were Turner and Girtin, who were commissioned to copy sketches by older artists such as John Robert Cozens, Thomas Hearne and Edward Dayes. A lady in finery is assisted by a well-dressed gentleman, whilst other figures are more rustic workers, including a man on horseback with a small herd of cattle. The scene is a fine encapsulation of the increased mixing of social classes that occurred in such Romantic beauty spots in the early 19th century, with the advent of tourism and a growing middle class. The landscape has previously been catalogued as a Highland lake, but this is unconfirmed; alternatively it is possibly a Welsh estuary or perhaps a Romantic confection. The view is no doubt, like other drover subjects by Richardson, in the Scottish Highlands, a landscape favoured by the artist for its rugged splendor. Richardson is known to have painted 'Drovers above Loch Tay', depicting Scotland's traditional cattle drovers en route to the famous tryst at Crieff—where drovers from the north, and their 30,000 cows, would converge on the Perthshire town. Another work by the artist, in the Victoria and Albert Museum (FA.539), shows figures and animals crossing an Aberdeenshire bridge. The emotive trope of 'returning home' is one that had been used since the 18th century watercolourists, who included a peasant returning from market, or a labourer trudging home after work, to imbue a landscape with atmosphere.

During his lifetime, Richardson's colourful watercolours of Northern England and the Scottish Highlands, as well as his scenic panoramas of Italy and Switzerland, enjoyed great popularity and fetched high prices. In 1857, John Ruskin noted of one Highland view, a Scene in Glen Nevis exhibited at the Old Water-Colour Society, ‘Mr. Richard [sic] is gradually gaining in manual power, and opposes cobalt and burnt sienna very pleasantly.' Ham Hill Stone can be readily sawn and dressed and as a consequence is woven into the fabric of many medieval churches in Devon, Dorset and western Somerset in the form of door and window surrounds.

In the 19th century there were twenty-four small quarries operating on Ham Hill employing some 200 men. In later Victorian times industrial quarrying expanded significantly, with upwards of 200 small family-run quarries and masonry businesses operating on site. Painted by Tidey in the latter decades of the 19th century, however, here the artist's vision is one of youthful recreation and exploration—a young figure scampers up the rockside overgrown with foliage—not of Victorian industry. Titled 'The Old Ham Stone Quarry', it celebrates the quarry not as a place of industrial innovation but rather as a picturesque site of an ancient practice—dating back to Roman times at Ham Hill—that links human civilisation and the very earth itself.

Alfred Tidey (1808–1892) was a miniature painter, born in Worthing, Sussex. His father was a schoolmaster and his younger brother, Henry Fryer Tidey (1814–1872), also became an artist. While still young he came to London, where he attracted the notice of Henry Neville, 2nd Earl of Abergavenny. He began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1831, and in 1836 he sent a miniature of Sir John Conroy to the Duchess of Kent. This led to the Duchess's daughter, the young Queen Victoria, commissioning him in 1841 to paint a miniature of the Hon. Julia Henrietta Anson, one of her maids of honour. Further notable commissions included Queen Victoria's daughter, the Empress Frederick, and granddaughter, Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein. He continued to exhibit miniatures at the Royal Academy regularly until 1857, but seldom after that date. He also exhibited some watercolour drawings, ending in 1887. Three of his final works appeared in 1891 in the exhibition of the Dudley Gallery Art Society, of which he was a member.

In watercolour with white bodycolour highlights and scratching out.

Presented in a smart gilt frame with wash line mount in Ingres Cover Fabriano mount board. Girtin, along with his friend and rival J.M.W. Turner, abandoned the careful stained drawings of their predecessors, widening the scope of the watercolour medium to communicate mood and atmosphere, and establishing it as a reputable art form.

Girtin's early work resembles the 18th-century topographical sketches of his master Edward Dayes (1763–1804), using a traditional linear style, to which tone and colour were then added. But his mature style developed the distinctive brushwork and rich colouration evident in the present watercolour; innovatively, he conceived his pictures as a single cohesive entity rather than a collection of parts.

Girtin completed a number of sketching tours during his short life, journeying into the English countryside, visiting North Wales, the Lake District, Yorkshire and the West Country. But in comparison with other topographical artists, and notably his contemporary Turner, he was not particularly well travelled. Instead, throughout his career, Girtin would often use secondary sources as the basis for his watercolours and also construct compositions in his studio. The composition of the present watercolour bears similarity to some of the more modest rural subjects resulting from Girtin's short excursions in the vicinity of London, such as a sketch at Turver's Farm, Wimbish, nr Saffron Walden, Essex (BM no. 1855,0214.13) and Lane at Hampstead (V&A no. 1089-1884).

Also unlike Turner, Girtin remained something of an outsider to the art establishment: he did not study at the Academy's schools, and was rumoured to have radical, or even revolutionary sympathies. As well, he tried to break away from the traditional reliance on patronage, partly by trying to sell his work on the open market.

The connection of the present watercolour to Girtin is unclear.
