Born in Biebrich-Mosbach in Nassau in 1849, Heinrich Schlitt is best known for his humorous illustrations and designs featuring dwarves, sagas and fairy tales. Schlitt first received teaching from Wiesbaden artist Kaspar Kögler, then went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich with Wilhelm Lindenschmit from 1875—the date of this drawing.Schlitt worked successfully as an illustrator for the Illustrated Newspaper and the magazines Overland and Sea, Daheim and Schalk—his work became well known to the public through these magazines. He also worked as one of principal artists for the ceramics firm Villeroy and Boch, in particular designing drinking vessels, which are now highly collectable. His highly regarded painted frescoes also adorn the walls of the Rathskeller (town hall) in Munich and Wiesbaden.Here Schlitt has drawn a number studies of Medieval German costume features, including headpieces and jewellery. The distinctive heavy outlining to some of the illustrations give the appearance of medieval stained glass artwork—and indeed one is inscribed 'Nach eine Glascheibe' or 'After a glass pane'. As such, he contributed to the arts of naval victory, despite Smirke himself making no secret of his own democratic opinions.This design features a number of cameo portraits and bears the motto 'splendor septentriones,' which can mean 'the splendour of the seven stars' or 'the splendour of the North’. Allegorical figures from classical antiquity are used to give the design stature and gravitas—with Athena or Minerva (goddess of wisdom, craft, and war) to the right and Asclepius (hero and god of medicine) to the left, and possibly Marcus Aurelius on horseback in the centre. The pair had shared humanitarian interests and would often take groups of city children out to Ilkley or Bolton Abbey. Jessie Kitson went on to become first female Lord Mayor of Leeds. The picture is captioned in French, 'Arrosez vos Amitiés', which translates as 'Water your Friendships', presumably a reference to the civic cooperation required to do good. The male figure to the left is evidently a working man, who—significantly—wears the baggy long trousers of the \u003cem\u003esans-culottes\u003c\/em\u003e—the working class Revolutionaries who pitted themselves against the fashionable silk knee-breech-wearing nobility and bourgeoisie. The generally brown\/black palette of the drawing is accented with touches of bright blue and red bodycolour, colours of the Revolution.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe mood of the painting is one of watching and waiting. The composition emphatically sets light against dark.
