An original c.1912 pen & ink drawing – B.S.G., American Wild West Silhouette Greetings.

A sheet of iconic motifs from America's Wild West, hand-drawn in black ink, with the missive 'Best wishes from the West'. Drawn around 1912, this was a time when the mythic frontier was transitioning into settled states, and with it the notion of the Wild West became romanticised. The frontier cowgirl at the centre also represents the increasing liberties of women, whilst nevertheless framing her—posed and beautiful—amidst male pursuits.

In black ink with red gouache. Note that the corners of the paper are rounded as shown.

Late-Edwardian Sketches: SS Golconda, India & Burma

This is one of a group of stylish works dating from the late Edwardian / Pre-World War One period, collected by a Walter E. Good (1911–1918). Some of the drawings were executed onboard SS Golconda, a British India Line service from London to Calcutta, whilst others were sketched at Madras and in Burma. The pictures embody the humour and aesthetic of a time of modernisation and social change in Britain, which was in conflict and tension with lingering traditions and class structures from the 19th century.
