An original c.1831 watercolour painting – William Warman, Pensive Christ.

An exquisitely painted vignette depicting Jesus Christ.

William Warman (1806–1875) paints Christ in pensive pose, common in Christian iconography, but brings elements of more traditional secular portraiture in the regal costume. Warman's skill is impressive and the detail to the face is exceptionally fine, executed with the delicate handling of a miniaturist. The painting is drawn in pure watercolour to the face, with grey wash and graphite to the body and clothing; as a result the refined facial features radiate from their monochrome surroundings.

Please note the small size of this artwork.

This work derives from a charming collection of Georgian friendship pictures that were collected by a Sarah Wood around 1831. Sarah seems to have been connected with East London. Contributors to the collection include many female members of the Irving family, of Basing Lane, Little Tower Hill; Thomas Timpson, minister of Union Chapel in Lewisham; and Benjamin Guy Babington (1794–1866), physician and epidemiologist at Guy's Hospital.
