As such, he contributed to the arts of naval victory, despite Smirke himself making no secret of his own democratic opinions. This design features a number of cameo portraits and bears the motto 'splendor septentriones,' which can mean 'the splendour of the seven stars' or 'the splendour of the North’. Allegorical figures from classical antiquity are used to give the design stature and gravitas—with Athena or Minerva (goddess of wisdom, craft, and war) to the right and Asclepius (hero and god of medicine) to the left, and possibly Marcus Aurelius on horseback in the centre. This design is very similar to other commemorative plates by Smirke dating from 1803, such as his famous ‘The Victory of the Nile’ (National Portrait Gallery, London), engraved by John Landseer, which features medallion portraits of Lord Nelson and his fourteen naval captains, flanked by allegorical figures of Fame and Nile—in tribute to Nelson's victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.This beautiful study has a sensitivity and charm which is lost in the more grand and formal finished, engraved plates.

This is one of two drawings by Smirke that we have for sale, which we acquired as a pair.

An original 1834 pen & ink drawing Copperplate Poem Elegy To Edward with Mother & Child Drawing.

A poignant elegaic poem in beautiful copperplate, by an unknown hand. From what at first appears an unassuming sketch unfolds a story of one of the 18th century's most important feminists and a home at the centre of an alternative, bohemian social milieu of Regency England.

Benham Park was the home of Elizabeth Craven (1750–1828), author, playwright and travel writer. Elizabeth, née Berkeley, was married to William Craven, 6th Baron Craven, until his death in 1791. Benham, as it is seen in this drawing, was built for William Craven by Henry Holland and Capability Brown in 1775, designed in a handsome neoclassical style. The house overlooks the picturesque valley of the River Kennet to the south, an area formerly water meadows, crossed by several waterways.

Elizabeth Craven was a celebrated society hostess and beauty. She included amongst her friends Horace Walpole, visiting his home at Strawberry Hill and some of her early work was published on the Strawberry Hill Press. But she had been pushed to marry William against her will aged just sixteen, and their marriage was unhappy and full of scandal. After thirteen years, seven children, and affairs reported on both sides, the couple parted permanently in 1780. Thereafter she lived at Versailles, Paris and travelled extensively on the Continent and in the Levant. In 1789 Walpole encouraged her to publish the story of her travels, 'A Journey through the Crimea to Constantinople'.

Whilst in Europe, Elizabeth became involved with Charles Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. During her years at the Ansbach court, she formed an amateur theatre at court and wrote several plays in French. She went on to marry the Margrave in 1791. Back in England, they bought a house at Fulham overlooking the Thames which they called Brandenburg House. Here Elizabeth mounted numerous theatrical productions at her private theatre and also at Benham Park. Often these plays touched on the theme of women’s status in marriage or the oppressive custom of arranged marriage. She and her circle of unconventional friends, artists, musicians, writers, French emigrés, wits and wags, created a high-spirited atmosphere and a riot of amusement.

Amongst these friends was the wealthy London merchant and accomplished amateur artist and actor John Colley Nixon (c.1755–1818), who has here drawn Benham Park in 1800. Nixon acted in many of Craven's productions at Benham and at Brandenburg House. He was a part of the fashionable artistic set and served as Secretary of the bohemian Beefsteak Club, one of London's earliest clubs. He was a close friend of Thomas Rowlandson and was himself a talented caricature artist. He also produced many topographical drawings and was friends with the topographer and satirist Captain Francis Grose, who accompanied him on one of the frequent trips to Ireland. His topographical work features in the series 'Seats of the Nobility and Gentry' and he illustrated travel books, such as Thomas Pennant's 'Journey from London to the Isle of Wight'. In 1841–2 he worked in Rome as an assistant to the major neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. Steven's own work was strongly influenced by Italian High Renaissance style; this neoclassical frieze design features a winged putto, classical pedestals, scrolls and laurel wreath, along with ribbon festoons.

Executed in black chalk with black wash, the design is inscribed 'Black Panel[?]', suggesting that it is possibly the design for a cast iron fire surround or chimney piece; highlights in white bodycolour mimic the sheen on black cast iron. In 1850 Stevens became chief designer to a Sheffield firm, Messrs. Hoole and Robson, who specialised in metalwork and won renown for metalwork exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. He also did work for the Coalbrookdale Iron Company. The festoon ribbons in this design are similar to a cast iron fire surround designed by Stevens for Colebrookdale, now in Colebrookdale Museum of Iron. Stevens' most famous commissions include the chimneypiece for the dining room of Dorchester House in London, and the monument to the Duke of Wellington in St Paul's Cathedral. His work was highly influential to sculptors of the New Sculpture movement, Frederic Leighton, George Frederic Watts and Hamo Thornycroft.

This design is perhaps particularly interesting as evidence of the artist's working process, given the fragmented, composite nature of the piece. The paper appears to have been repeatedly recomposed and extended, consisting of at least four separate segments, which have been laid down on a backing—apparently by the artist himself. The backing sheet has a further sculptural head sketch on the verso, along with the artist's signature. As a result, it very much has a feel of a work in progress, a design most likely never realised, and a snapshot of the creative mind of a man whom Thornycroft described as one of ‘the greatest sculptors this country has ever seen’.

In black chalk with black and brown wash and white bodycolour, on multiple fragments of wove paper. Reinier Vinkeles, Amsterdam Street Scene with Horse Sleigh.

This animated miniature street scene captures the bustling canal-side activity in 18th-century Amsterdam. Likely drawn around the 1760s by the Dutch painter and engraver Reinier Vinkeles (1741–1816), the view includes one of the distinctive horse-drawn sleighs (known as the ‘toeslede’ or ‘sleepkoets’) for which the city was known. Due to heavy taxes applied to wheeled vehicles, the wheel-less sleighs became a primary mode of urban public transit. The sleds were dragged across the cobblestone streets, with an oily cloth used to smooth the passage. The coachman walked alongside to guide the horse.

Much activity is squeezed into this small composition; finely clad gentlemen and women converse, alongside children and a dog. Large carts, carriages and mail coaches arriving in the city were too large for the narrow streets and left at designated 'cart squares', with much business then carried out on foot. In 1790 the German traveller-scientist Georg Forster visited Amsterdam and commented: 'in Amsterdam there are neighbourhoods where one can only painstakingly move through the swarming in narrow small streets. The whole day long, a continuous thunderous roaring dominates.'

In grey wash with red chalk on laid paper.
