A beautiful watercolour study of figures by a wooded lake. In pen, brush and sepia washes. With barely visible graphite underdrawing in places.John Varley OWS specialised in long, horizontal compositions with the 'clear skies, distances and water' which he claimed 'are the beauties most sought after in the art of watercolours'.Provenance: St Helier Galleries Ltd, Fine Art Dealers, Jersey. The painting is accompanied by a separate piece of board with dealer's labels dating from 1971, giving biographical detail about the artist.The painting is presented in an ivory wash line mount.
