Marmaduke A. Langdale Pre-Raphaelite Beauty
An original 19th-century watercolour painting, Marmaduke A. Langdale, Pre-Raphaelite Beauty.
This disarmingly beautiful portrait is painted with beguiling simplicity in a limited colour palette of rustic tones. The woman depicted is a striking example of 'Pre-Raphaelite Beauty'; the Pre-Raphaelites rejected the Victorian ideal of a submissive and delicate female, advocating instead an intense realism which favoured women with unconventional red flowing locks, strong facial features and statuesque figures. This portrait combines bold features and strength of poise with melancholic expression and vulnerability. The wide-set eyes, and arched sweeping brows resemble the features of Pre-Raphaelite model and artist Elizabeth Siddel.Watercolour with graphite. Laid down on green backing paper. A copy of a short article about Marmaduke Langdale published during the artist’s lifetime comes with the artwork.
