William Turner of Oxford At Botley, Berks

An original mid-19th-century graphite drawing, William Turner of Oxford, At Botley, Berks.

A wonderfully detailed graphite drawing of a half-timbered house in the village of Botley, by William Turner of Oxford (1789–1862). Botley, just west of Oxford and now considered to be in Oxfordshire, was historically in Berkshire. Turner was an English painter who specialised in watercolour landscapes. He was a contemporary of the more famous J. M. W. Turner, and he is often known as William Turner of Oxford to distinguish him from his better known namesake. Many of Turner's paintings depicted the countryside around Oxford. This is one of two drawings at Botley by William Turner that we have for sale.On watercolour card. The drawing is inscribed verso 'J. Richardson Esq'—which appears to be a reference to artist Joseph Richardson (of the artistic Mingaye Richardson family of Oxford), likely the previous owner of the drawing.
