William Warman Portrait of King David

An original mid-19th-century watercolour painting, William Warman, Portrait of King David.

An exquisitely painted vignette portrait of King David by William Warman (1806–1875). Warman's skill is impressive and the detail to the face and hair is exceptionally fine, executed with the delicate handling of a miniaturist.

King David, described in the Hebrew Bible as king of the United Monarchy of Israel and Judah, has been a subject of paintings throughout history. Presented here in a richly coloured turban crown, the subject is an example of the Orientalism that was popular in the west in the 19th century.

In watercolour and graphite. On watermarked J Whatman thin card.
