An original 1832 watercolour painting Matlock on the River Derwent, Derbyshire.
A fine and impressive large vignette watercolour in blue-grey and brown wash. The Romantic landscape subject, looking towards Matlock with the towering craggy tors behind, draws on Rev William Gilpin's aesthetic principles of the picturesque, exquisitely placed between the 'sublime' and the 'beautiful'.
The painting formed part of a series commissioned in 1832 by Catherine Johnstone née Brome (1775–1833), who was married to William Johnstone, Vicar of Culmington, Ludlow.
On buff-coloured paper laid down on backing paper.
