An original 1891 watercolour painting, E.W., Mountain View with Lake & Hut, Horrà.
The artist and subject of this distinctive and beautifully painted watercolour remain a mystery. The painting is signed 'EW' and dated 12.6.91. The verso is inscribed, by a later hand, E.W. Cooke RA 1891', however, the English landscape and marine painter Edward William Cooke RA FRS FZS FSA FGS (1811– 1880) died a decade too early for this to be correct. The dramatic landscape view, inscribed 'Horra' is possibly La Horra in northern Spain; the mountain peaks, however, suggest it could perhaps be Grange Horres in Bardonecchia in the Piedmont region of Italy.The painting style is distinctive, with loose brushstrokes and dabs of wash combined with vigorius additions of bodycolour, pastel and scratching out.

Condition: There is age toning across the sheet, and some marks, more prominent on the verso of the paper. There is some damage to the left-hand side of the sheet, including loss at the upper left corner, as shown, and some cerasing and repaired tears to the left and upper edges. This damage could potentially be mounted out without detriment to the overall image.
