An original early 19th-century graphite drawing, Sir Augustus Wall Callcott RA, Preparatory Study, Resting Figure.
A delightful figure study by Sir Augustus Wall Callcott RA (1779–1844). In his day Callcott was one of the most admired of English landscape and marine painters. The figures in his landscapes were often important parts of the composition, and were always gracefully designed and happily placed.
The verso of the drawing is inscribed 'Miss Calcott'. This is possibly Augustus's niece, Elizabeth Wall Callcott (1793–1875); the paper has horizontal fold lines, suggesting that the drawing was possibly folded and addressed to be given to her.
On wove paper with partial watermark 'H WH[...] 18[...]'.
